I just read that same "essay"... DiFilippo is a pretentious douchebag. I wrote my first big feature in Wired recently and had a similarly ego-rattling experience going thru several drafts, and I whined to my writer friends all about how my brilliant individual "voice" was being steamrolled. Then I realized what a prima donna twat I was being. Glossy magazines are a business, and they each have a format. Writing for that format is not art, it's a job, and staying true to their format is why they can afford to pay you $2 a word. If DiFilippo was so bent out of shape when the editor (as she should have) axed all his gassy "literary references," he should have remembered to READ the fricking magazine before taking the assignment.
